The Baume name has been associated with watchmaking in the Jura area of Switzerland since the sixteenth century. Brothers Louis Victor and Pierre Joseph Celestin Baume first established Baume & Mercier in 1830 and registered it as the Societe Baume Feres at Les Bois in the Swiss Jura Mountains.

In 1844 Joseph Celestin Baume went to England to set up business there. Watches signed "Waterloo", "Diviko" and "Sirdar" opened up markets in Australia and New Zealand. Baume & Mercier gave convincing proof of its dedication to mechanical elegance and watch making precision when one of its timepieces won the 1893 timing competitions at the Kew Observatory with a score of 91.9 out of a possible 100.

In 1912, William Baume met the watchmaker and jeweler Paul Mercier in Geneva. The meeting resulted in the signing of an agreement in 1918 for the establishment of Baume & Mercier in Geneva. This proved to be a very successful enterprise, and in 1921 they were awarded the coveted Poincon de Geneve, being official recognition of flawless quality watch products. Baume & Mercier watches dating from this period are now rare collectors pieces, worth thousands of dollars.

In 1937 William Baume withdrew from active business. He was followed into retirement by Paul Mercier, and the jeweler Constantin de Gorski joined the company.

In 1964 they introduced the Greek Phi symbol as their corporate emblem. It represents the Baume & Mercier brand's high standards of workmanship, attention to detail and commitment to watch making quality.

In 1980 the Baume & Mercier Riviera sports watch was first produced. To test its durability and precision, a Riviera watch was mounted on the wheel of a BMW M1 before the start of the Le Mans 24 hour race. The watch endured the speed, heat and weather and ran perfectly after the race.

After World War II Baume & Mercier concentrated on conventional men's watches, sports chronographs and ladies' jewellery watches. In 1965 the Piaget family bought control over Baume & Mercier. One of the world's thinnest calendar watches with a mini rotor was produced under Piaget's aegis. In the same year the new owners switched to electronic tuning fork movements, and from 1970 increased investments in quartz movements.

In recent years years Baume & Mercier has made a name for itself as a watch making trendsetter. Fashionable models such as the Capeland and Hampton defined a new watch style in the 1980’s and 1990’s, for both men and women.
